The game incorporates scenarios where you may experience perilous weathers and encounter life-threatening creatures. Starting from the very beginning of existence, ARK: Survival Evolved will take you on a journey through different eras. As the times change, you will have to learn how to survive by adapting and strategizing how you will surpass each challenging period. ARK: Survival Evolved will make you experience the different stages of life as you try to survive and adapt to the changes in your environment and the evolution of all things around you. If you're on PC, the initial download will reserve space on your hard drive to download all the files, which seems to be excessive, imo. With all the maps downloaded, the game takes up a total of 300-400Gb.

Each map you add can run from 20-65Gb, so the more maps you have, the more space it takes. What makes Ark such a big file is having all the maps downloaded. I think with the season pass (or whatever the base Ark pass is called), it auto downloads the first 4 maps, maybe? Not sure if you can choose what maps you want before it downloads, but I know you can select individual maps after downloading to remove them and free up space. Just getting the base game (Ark:Survival Evolved) and only downloading 1 map (the island) will only take up around 60-80Gb, so it's on par with most modern game sizes.
